This issue of the magazine includes:

• Names: A Song of Autumn’s Last Days

2019 marks fifty years since the death of the Yiddish poet and playwright Itzik Manger (1901–1969), a visionary and self-proclaimed troubadour. We have used the occasion to publish new Russian translations of several poems by Manger and his seminal essay “The Ballad: The Vision of Blood.”

• Review: A Contract with God Published in Russian

American cartoonist Will Eisner (1917–2005) fathered the graphic novel with his pioneering book A Contract with God (1978), a collection of four stories about poor Jews living in a tenement in New York City. A Russian translation of Eisner’s novel was recently published in Moscow. Our reviewer is grateful to the publishers for introducing readers to the father of a genre that has only recently put down roots in Russia. He argues, however, that it would have been better to publish another graphic novel by Eisner, The Plot: The Secret Story of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion (2005).
